Babies all around!

As I write this we have 23 chicks, 7 baby rabbits, 5 puppies, 3 probably pregnant goats, and 1 pregnant dog....it's springtime on the farm!
We are definitely growing in numbers and goals, over the winter we have talked about what we hope to learn, expand and reduce.
Every other year we cull our flock of chickens, if they aren't laying they aren't staying! We haven't had chicks in a while but it's time to add a younger flock and time for more eggs. This winter was hard. Long, cloudy, dark, cold, and raining....our poor hens were showing their strong disdain for the weather by tapering down to maybe laying once a week, and then they all went into molt! Ugh, I'm not a fan at all of that, feathers everywhere, the girls are cold and naked in parts as the new feathers have to grow in and no eggs! Well we now have some nice little chickies that will hopefully start laying the late summer and lay through the winter because we need eggs. Some of the breeds we got are Leghorn, Rhode Island Red, ISA reds, Buff Orpington, some Cream Legbar crosses and a few Queen Silvias, of which I had never heard of but are a mix of RIR and Leghorns and are also called Death-layers, because they tend to only live for 5 to 7 years and can lay until they die! My son is beyond excited to name those babies!

The rabbits have been an easy keeper, we love our breeding pair Spicy Racecar and MoonBeam Dancer. This is their second litter and I'm hoping that with the warmer weather and things perking up in the garden, that they will grow and fatten up nicely. We really enjoy the meat and plan to breed two more litters this year.
