Spring prep and Planting....And then it grows!

Now that it is May, we have planted pretty much everything in the ground that was on our list!
Lil Man and I weeding the side yard and prepping for the mint bed. He was mostly hunting for worms to feed to chickens

It looks so much better now that it is weeded and has the lawn barrier. We built the lattice so we had more privacy and it will support the honeysuckle that I planted last year.

This was the garden in late March, we got very lucky and had a mild winter, Spring came early, the stars aligned and I was able to have time to build the new dahlia and squash beds.
The Hubs was even willing to sacrifice a few feet of lawn for his dahlias. We moved all the gravel/rocks from the front yard to the garden to add more pathways between beds. The dahlia bed in now the front bed to the left. The raspberries are just starting to sprout.

This is the new squash bed, to the right, it's 12 feet long by 2 1/2 feet wide. perfect for all the squash  cucumbers, and yellow crooknecks with calendulas along the ends

This is bed #2, the salad greens bed. I had to put wire netting over the beds because our farm cat Pirate would poop in the beds...Unfortunately he has disappeared and with so many coyotes around we assume he is dead. The only things growing at this time was Corn Salad or Mache, it's very similar to spinach and cold hardy!

The fruit trees are just beginning to bud out. they are now 2 years in the the ground and we're hopeful for some fruit this year.

The garden just starting in late March.

These are my hanging baskets now. The bacopa is very happy and loving the full south facing sun.

The geraniums are now blooming and have tripled in size!

Because the mice have come back, I started our first batch of corn indoors. Its is now tall enough that I can take out the bigger starts and out them in the beds. We are growing Red sweet corn, popcorn, Butter & Cream Early corn, and Sweet Yellow.

I'm very happy with how well both the rosemary and french lavender are doing. I bought this rosemary last year and it has grown so fast!

The french Lavender I bought the year we moved here from Utah, so almost 4 years ago. and it is huge!  Both of these whiskey barrels I had to rebuild after we bought our house, because the fell apart in the move.

The side yard looks awesome, the Honeysuckle has filled out like crazy, and all the tomatoes are now in their tires.
This year we are growing, Purple Cherokee, Black Prince, Yellow Pear, Roma, Stupice, Big Boy, Red Lighting, and Barber's Paste, I'm excited to see how all of these varieties do. The goal is to make canned salsa and pasta sauce.

Opposite of the honeysuckle and tomatoes is the mint and hydrangea bed. I have Sweet Mint, Chocolate mint, Peppermint, Lemon Balm, Orange Mint and Spicy Mint.

The trellis from the opposite direction. This fence runs North to South, so one side gets morning sun and the tomatoes side gets full, hot afternoon sun

The peas, I have sugar and snap coming up now, we are doing 3 separate planing dates to extend the growing and harvest season. We also just planted beans over the weekend. There is black, Scarlett Runner, Blue Lake, English long, and Kentucky Wonder.

This is it! The whole garden all 16 beds, and fruit trees.
We are growing carrots, radishes, pumpkins, spaghetti squash, zucchini, garlic, sweet and green onions, salad greens, basil, tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kale, spinach, pak choy, red and gold potatoes, dill, chives, cilantro, nasturtiums, Calendulas, sweet peas, dahlias, chamomile, bush beans, beets, quinoa, celery, cabbage, sunflowers, poppies, cucumbers, yellow squash, and butternut squash.

The raspberries are blooming and oh I'm excited to pick these guys this summer!!

The dahlia bed, I put sweet onions and kale in with the 8 variety colors of dahlias.

The zucchini, cucumbers, yellow crookneck and butternut squash are all here.

The bees are doing great! Happy, producing, and even though we lost one colony over the winter the other one, in the white hive is doing really well and we were able to order another colony for the green hive.

My photo buddies. They are little explorers right now!

Yes! Our first cherries!!!

The Ladies, Izzabird, Mabyl, Giselle, Rosetta, Penny, and Snow White. They wanted to see what I'm up to, and looking for hand outs.

The herb bed. I'm adding a few more things this year, I'm hoping to expand my herbs to have on hand. already I have Echinechea, Golden Sage, Sage, Lime Thyme, English Thyme, Fennel, Oregano,

The Rhubarb is super happy in this partially shaded corner. Surrounding it is Comfery, Lemon Balm, and Spearmint.

The west side of the yard, we are almost done with the retaining wall. What a project! This was taken the end of March.

This was taken this week, the strawberries and blueberries are doing really well, and blooming. This should be a great  summer for berries. My kids can hardly wait to eat fresh berries again!

The front yard looks so nice now too!

The front yard has this weird hill/slope that was such a waste of space and as it sat there in full sun as I plotted and planned what I could plant in there....after moving dirt from the back yard, adding tagro and wood chips I was able to plant a lilac, some day lilies, iris, marigolds, dahlias, African daisies, and pansies. The kids helped and we also planted seed for sunflowers, marigold, delphinium, poppies, Rebeckia, chamomile, quinoa, and amaranth.

The retaining wall/planter bed is almost done, we have to put the railroad ties in place along the upper level,

The house, our home! I love how the front door just pops against all the green around!
